那智の滝そのものを御神体とする神社、飛瀧神社。那智の滝を最も間近で感じられる場所です。
Hirō Shrine is a sacred site where Nachi Falls itself is worshipped as the deity.It is the place where you can experience the falls at the closest possible distance.
熊野古道の最後の巡礼地は那智大社ですが、那智の滝（飛瀧神社）は那智大社の信仰の起源とも言える存在であり、自然そのものを崇めた古来の信仰を感じることができます。この場所の空気は、言葉で表すのが難しいです。ぜひ一度、自分で訪れてみてください。
While Kumano Nachi Taisha is regarded as the final pilgrimage site of the Kumano Kodo, Nachi Falls (Hirō Shrine) can be seen as the origin of its faith, where the ancient belief of nature worship—revering nature itself—can still be felt today.”The atmosphere here is difficult to put into words.That is exactly why I would recommend visiting it yourself.
行き方は、青岸渡寺の三重塔から坂を下り、那智の滝へ向かって10分ほど歩くと、飛瀧神社の鳥居にたどり着きます。そこからさらに参道を5分ほど進みます。
To get there, walk down the slope from the three-story pagoda of Seiganto-ji Temple and head toward Nachi Falls. After about 10 minutes, you will arrive at the torii gate of Hirō Shrine. From there, walk another 5 minutes along the approach.
この参道が、とても印象的です。鬱蒼とした森の中を歩いていると、空気が変わり、少しずつ心が澄んでいくような感覚になります。
ただし、かなり急な道なので足元には注意が必要です。
This approach path is especially memorable.As you walk through the forest, the air becomes noticeably cooler, and you gradually feel as if your mind is being cleared.
However, the path is quite steep, so be careful with your footing.
深い緑に包まれた石段が尽きた先に、那智の滝が現れます。
岩壁を一直線に落ちる水、その轟音、肌に当たる風。
ただ「美しい」というよりも、圧倒的な“力”を感じます。
古代の人々が自然そのものを神として崇めた理由が、理屈ではなく感覚として分かります。
At the end of the stone steps, surrounded by deep greenery, Nachi Falls comes into view.
Water plunges straight down the rock face.
The roaring sound, the wind brushing against your skin—
rather than simply being “beautiful,” it feels overwhelmingly powerful.
Standing before the falls, you begin to understand—not intellectually, but instinctively—why ancient people worshipped nature itself as a god.
那智の滝は、大己貴命（おおなむち）が姿を変えたものと伝えられています。大己貴命は、大国主命（おおくにぬし）や大物主神（おおものぬし）とも呼ばれる神です。
この神は、国を豊かにする一方で、疫病をもたらすなど、自然の恵みと畏怖の両面を象徴する存在とされています。山などの自然を神とする三輪山や諏訪大社などに祀られていることからも、もともとは山や水といった大自然そのものに宿る神を表していたと考えられます。そうした古代の自然信仰を感じることができます。
Nachi Falls is said to be a manifestation of Ōnamuchi-no-Mikoto.This deity is also known as Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto and Ōmononushi-no-Kami.This god represents both sides of nature—bringing prosperity to the land while also possessing a fearsome aspect, such as causing disease.
Since this deity is enshrined at places like Mount Miwa and Suwa Taisha, which originate from ancient nature worship, it can be considered that the name once referred to the divine presence residing in mountains, water, and the natural world itself.
Here, you can truly feel the continuity of that ancient faith.
さらに近くで滝を拝むために、「お滝拝所」に入ります。拝所に入るには300円（現金のみ）が必要ですが、その価値は十分にあります。
To view the falls even more closely, you can enter the “Otaki Worship Area.”An entrance fee of 300 yen (cash only) is required, but it is well worth it.
お滝拝所。那智の滝に圧倒され、時間も忘れて立ち尽くしてしまいました。
Standing there, overwhelmed by Nachi Falls, I found myself frozen in place, losing track of time.
拝所の近くでは、延命長寿に御利益があるという那智の水を飲むことができますが、あまりにも那智の滝に感動して、飲むのを忘れていました。
Near the worship area, you can drink the sacred water of Nachi, said to bring longevity.
However, I was so captivated by the falls that I completely forgot to drink it.
この日は朝8時半ごろに到着。
休日でしたが人は少なく、10分ほど、滝と一対一で向き合う時間を持つことができました。
I arrived around 8:30 in the morning.
Although it was a holiday, there were few people, and I was able to spend about ten minutes alone, facing the waterfall.
熊野詣では、心身を清め新たな自分へと生まれ変わる効果があるとされます。
那智は、よみがえりの地として信じられてきた熊野古道の最後の巡礼地ですが、昔の人たちも同じように、私も心が清められ、新たな自分に生まれ変わった感覚になりました。
The Kumano pilgrimage is said to purify both body and mind, allowing one to be reborn into a new self.
Nachi, long believed to be the final sacred destination of the Kumano Kodo—a place of spiritual rebirth—gave me the same feeling.Just like those who came before, I felt cleansed, as if I had been reborn.
