熊野古道で気づいたことや感想をまとめます。熊野古道を巡る人の参考になればうれしいです。
Here are some of the things I noticed and my impressions from walking the Kumano Kodo. I hope this article will be helpful for anyone planning to explore the Kumano Kodo.
熊野古道に持っていったもの

（ほとんどPayPayで支払えたため、現金はあまり使いませんでした。寺社仏閣の参拝料などで、合計2000円ほど使用。）
・携帯電話
（「電波が届かない場所がある」という話も聞きましたが、私が歩いた場所では問題なく使えました。）
・充電器
・時計
・着替え
・帽子
・くまスプレー、熊鈴
・タオル
・食事と飲み物
（コンビニが少ないため、意外と役に立ちました。）
What I Brought to the Kumano Kodo
- Wallet
(Most places accepted PayPay, so I rarely used cash. I spent about 2,000 yen in total for temple and shrine admission fees.) - Smartphone
(I had heard that there were areas without reception, but I had no problems during my trip.) - Charger
- Watch
- Change of clothes
- Hat
- Bear spray and bear bell
- Towel
- Food and drinks
(There are very few convenience stores, so these were more useful than I expected.)
1日目 中辺路（牛馬童子〜野中）
11：35 紀伊田辺駅発のバスに乗車
（牛馬童子・湯峯温泉・本宮大社方面）
12：34 牛馬童子口バス停着
道の駅に軽食やトイレがありました。
近露を通り、野中方面へ歩きます。
多くの人は滝尻から歩くそうですが、時間がかかるため今回は牛馬童子でバスを降りました。
15：00頃 野中の一方杉着
この周辺は、
野中の清水
など見どころが多く、熊野古道らしい雰囲気を感じられる場所でした。
16：10 野中の一方杉バス停発
※注意点・野中の一方杉からバス停まで徒歩約20分あります。
・通り過ぎてしまったのですが、野中の一方杉の近くに「とがの木茶屋」という休憩所がありました。
16：29 下湯峯バス停着
湯の峯荘宿泊。素晴らしい温泉と食事でした。
Day 1: Nakahechi Route (Gyubadoji to Nonaka)
11:35 — Took a bus from Kii-Tanabe Station(bound for Gyubadoji, Yunomine Onsen, and Hongu Taisha)
12:34 — Arrived at Gyubadoji-guchi Bus Stop
There was a roadside station nearby with light meals and restrooms.
From there, I walked through Chikatsuyu toward Nonaka.
Most people seem to start walking from Takijiri, but since it takes much longer, I got off at Gyubadoji this time.
Around 15:00 — Arrived at Nonaka-no-Ipposugi
This area had many highlights, including:
Nonaka Spring
It was a place where I could truly feel the atmosphere of the Kumano Kodo.
16:10 — Departed from Nonaka-no-Ipposugi Bus Stop
Notes:
- It takes about 20 minutes on foot from Nonaka-no-Ipposugi to the bus stop.
- I passed by it, but there is a rest area called “Togano-ki Chaya” near Nonaka-no-Ipposugi.
16:29 — Arrived at Shimoyunomine Bus Stop
Stayed at Yunomineso.
The hot spring and meals there were excellent.
2日目 湯ノ峰温泉〜熊野本宮〜新宮
6：00 つぼ湯へ
すでに数名並んでいたため断念しました。
つぼ湯は予約ができないため、時間にかなり余裕がないと難しそうです。
7：00 朝食（湯の峯荘）
とても美味しかったです。
8：00 湯ノ峰温泉出発 大日越へ
思ったより急な登り坂でした。
10分に1回くらいは人とすれ違ったため、安心感はありました。
10：10頃 大斎原着
徒歩約5分で 熊野本宮大社 へ。
時間があれば熊野本宮館にも行ってみたかったです。
11：50 熊野本宮大社発のバスに乗車
※注意点 熊野本宮大社前はバスの行き先が多く、少し分かりづらかったです。
昼食は、本宮周辺の売店で買ったおにぎり。
12：38 熊野速玉大社 着
徒歩約5分で神倉神社へ。
神倉神社の石段はかなり急で怖かったため、荷物は軽めがおすすめです。
神倉神社から新宮駅までは徒歩約15分。
新宮駅から電車で紀伊勝浦へ向かいました。
予定より早く着いたため、紀の松島巡りの船にも乗ることができました。
17：00 お宿 はな
この宿はおすすめです。
素泊まりで部屋にトイレ・風呂はありませんが、
- 価格が安い
- 必要な設備は揃っている
- 予約すれば温泉に入れる
という、とても使いやすい宿でした。
夕食は近くの食堂でマグロ丼を食べました。
Day 2: Yunomine Onsen – Kumano Hongu – Shingu
6:00 — Went to Tsuboyu
Several people were already waiting, so I gave up.
Since reservations are not possible, it seems difficult to enter unless you have plenty of extra time.
7:00 — Breakfast at Yunomineso.It was delicious.
8:00 — Departed from Yunomine Onsen and walked the Dainichigoe Route
The uphill climb was steeper than I expected.
However, I passed other hikers about once every ten minutes, which made me feel safe.
Around 10:10 — Arrived at Oyunohara
From there, it was about a five-minute walk to Kumano Hongu Taisha.
If I had more time, I would have liked to visit the Kumano Hongu Heritage Center as well.
11:50 — Took a bus from Kumano Hongu Taisha
Notes:
The bus stops around Kumano Hongu Taisha were a little confusing because there were many different destinations.
For lunch, I ate rice balls bought at a nearby shop.
12:38 — Arrived at Kumano Hayatama Taisha
From there, it was about a five-minute walk to Kamikura Shrine.
The stone steps at Kamikura Shrine were extremely steep and a little frightening, so I recommend carrying light luggage.
It took about 15 minutes to walk from Kamikura Shrine to Shingu Station.
From Shingu Station, I took a train to Kii-Katsuura.
Since I arrived earlier than expected, I was also able to take a sightseeing boat tour around Ki no Matsushima.
17:00 — Stayed at Oyado Hana
I highly recommend this accommodation.
Although the rooms do not have private bathrooms or toilets, it was:
- inexpensive,
- equipped with everything necessary,
- and guests could use a hot spring bath with a reservation.
It was a very comfortable and convenient place to stay.
For dinner, I ate a tuna rice bowl at a nearby restaurant.
3日目 那智
6：45 紀伊勝浦駅前発のバスに乗車
※注意点 紀伊勝浦周辺はコンビニが少なく、食べ物を持って行けば良かったと思いました。
7：10 大門坂着
バス停のすぐ近くにトイレがあります。
熊野古道らしい石畳と杉並木が続き、とても印象的な道でした。
その後、

那智の滝前発のバスに乗車
予定より早くバス停に着いたため、
- 勝浦漁港にぎわい市場
- 商店街
にも立ち寄りました。
海の幸とレトロな商店街の雰囲気が楽しかったです。
昼食は「めはり寿司二代目」。
11：45 紀伊勝浦駅発
14：22 道成寺 着
日本の伝統芸能を代表する名作、能『道成寺』や歌舞伎『京鹿子娘道成寺』の舞台として知られる寺です。映画 国宝 のポスターでも、『京鹿子娘道成寺』の衣装が使われています。
15：13 道成寺発
16：07 御坊駅着
御坊駅前も意外と楽しかったです。
Day 3: Nachi
6:45 — Took a bus from Kii-Katsuura Station
Notes:There were very few convenience stores around Kii-Katsuura, so I wished I had brought more food.
7:10 — Arrived at Daimonzaka.
There is a restroom right next to the bus stop.
The stone-paved path lined with cedar trees felt very much like the Kumano Kodo and left a strong impression on me.
After that, I visited:
Then I took a bus from Nachi Falls.
Since I arrived at the bus stop earlier than expected, I also visited:
- Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market
- the local shopping street
I enjoyed the seafood and the nostalgic atmosphere of the old-fashioned town.
For lunch, I ate at “Mehari Sushi Nidaime.”
11:45 — Departed from Kii-Katsuura Station
14:22 — Arrived at Dojo-ji Temple
This temple is famous as the setting of the masterpieces of Japanese traditional performing arts: the Noh play Dojoji and the Kabuki dance drama Kyokanoko Musume Dojoji.
The costume from Kyokanoko Musume Dojoji was also featured on the poster for the film Kokuho.
15:13 — Departed from Dojo-ji
16:07 — Arrived at Gobo Station
The wait there was long, but the area around the station was surprisingly enjoyable to explore.
実際に行って分かったこと
・コンビニが少ないため、食事や飲み物は少し確保しておいた方が安心
・PayPayがかなり使えた
・バス移動は便利だが、本数が少ないため事前確認が重要
・神倉神社や大日越など、一部かなり急な場所もある
・熊野古道は「完全な山奥」というより、意外と人が歩いていて安心感があった
Things I Learned During the Trip
- Since there are very few convenience stores, it is safer to prepare food and drinks in advance.
- PayPay was accepted in many places.
- Bus transportation is convenient, but checking schedules beforehand is essential because buses are infrequent.
- Some places, such as Kamikura Shrine and the Dainichigoe Route, are quite steep.
- The Kumano Kodo is not completely isolated; there were more hikers than I expected, which made me feel reassured.
まとめ
熊野古道は、公共交通機関だけでも十分巡ることができました。
一方で、
- バスの本数が少ない
- コンビニが少ない
- 山道や急な石段がある
など、事前に知っておいた方が良いことも多くあります。
特に、
- 食べ物や飲み物を準備する
- バス時間を事前に確認する
- 荷物を軽めにする
この3点はかなり大事だと感じました。
今回紹介したルートは、
- 中辺路
- 熊野三山
- 那智
- 新宮
まで巡ることができるため、初めて熊野古道へ行く人にもおすすめです。
これから熊野古道へ行く人の参考になれば嬉しいです。
Conclusion
The Kumano Kodo can be explored comfortably even using only public transportation.
At the same time, there are several things that are important to know beforehand, such as:
- the limited number of buses,
- the lack of convenience stores,
- and the steep mountain paths and stone stairways.
In particular, I found these three points especially important:
- prepare food and drinks in advance,
- check bus schedules beforehand,
- and keep your luggage as light as possible.
This route allows visitors to experience:
- the Nakahechi Route,
- the Kumano Sanzan,
- Nachi,
- and Shingu,
making it a good choice for first-time visitors to the Kumano Kodo.
