加賀藩主・前田家の庭園として造られた兼六園。岡山の後楽園、水戸の偕楽園とともに日本三名園の一つに数えられています。
兼六園は夏季は午前7時、冬季は午前8時に開園しますが、開園前の早朝には無料で入園できます（時間帯は季節によって異なります）。
私は朝5時に訪れました。ほとんど人がおらず、静かな兼六園をゆっくりと散策することができました。
Kenroku-en was created as the garden of the Maeda family, the lords of the Kaga Domain. Together with Koraku-en in Okayama and Kairaku-en in Mito, it is regarded as one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens.
The garden officially opens at 7:00 a.m. in summer and 8:00 a.m. in winter, but visitors can enter free of charge during the early morning hours before opening time (the available hours vary depending on the season).
I arrived at 5:00 a.m. With almost no one else around, I was able to enjoy a peaceful walk through the tranquil garden.
①日本最古の噴水Japan’s Oldest Fountain
自然の高低差を利用した、日本最古とされる噴水です。
This is considered to be Japan’s oldest fountain. It operates naturally by using the difference in elevation within the garden, without the need for pumps.
② 琴柱灯籠（ことじとうろう）Kotoji Lantern
兼六園のシンボルです。琴を支える「琴柱（ことじ）」に似ていることから、この名が付けられました。灯籠の前の橋は琴に似せて作られています。
The Kotoji Lantern is the symbol of Kenroku-en. It takes its name from one of its supporting legs, which resembles a kotoji, the bridge used to support the strings of a traditional Japanese koto. The stone bridge in front of the lantern was also designed to resemble a koto.
③ 蓬莱島 Horai Island
長寿や幸福を願って造られた縁起の良い島です。
A small island created as a symbol of longevity and good fortune.
④ 日本海を望む眺め A View of the Sea of Japan
From certain points in the garden, you can enjoy a distant view of the Sea of Japan.
⑤ 唐崎松Karasaki Pine
滋賀県・唐崎の松の種子を取り寄せて育てられた黒松です。
A Japanese black pine grown from seeds brought from Karasaki in Shiga Prefecture.
⑥ 根上松（ねあがりまつ）Neagari Pine
土を盛った場所に松を植え、成長した後に土を取り除くことで、根が地上に現れるように造られました。
This remarkable pine was planted on a mound of earth. After the tree had grown, the surrounding soil was removed, leaving its roots dramatically exposed above the ground.
⑦ 七福神山 Shichifukujin-yama
七福神にちなんだ縁起の良い築山です。
A small artificial hill named after the Seven Lucky Gods, symbolizing good fortune.
⑧ 栄螺山（さざえやま） Sazae-yama
らせん状の園路を登る築山で、頂上から園内を眺めることができます。
A spiral-shaped artificial hill with a winding path leading to the top, where visitors can enjoy views of the garden.
私が訪れたのは早朝だったため利用できませんでしたが、園内では抹茶を楽しんだり、庭園を眺めながら休憩したりすることもできます。
Because I visited early in the morning, I was unable to experience everything the garden has to offer. Later in the day, visitors can enjoy matcha tea while relaxing and taking in the beautiful garden scenery.
次は隣の金城霊澤へ行きました。
After exploring Kenroku-en Garden, I headed to the nearby Kinjo Reitaku.
