The Higashi Chaya District was once one of Kanazawa’s entertainment quarters. Unlike the samurai district, there are no high earthen walls. Instead, the streets are lined with traditional wooden lattice windows known as kimusuko. These lattices make it difficult to see inside from the street while allowing those indoors to observe the outside.
As Kanazawa’s castle town developed, theaters and other entertainment venues were established. To regulate these businesses, teahouses were concentrated in designated districts. They also provided a livelihood for geisha and others working in the entertainment world. During the Edo period, the district flourished with a level of prosperity rivaling Kyoto and Osaka. Skilled geisha refined traditional performing arts such as dance, noh chanting (yokyoku), and the koto, and this elegant cultural tradition continues to this day.
