Kanazawa is located near the rich fishing grounds of the Sea of Japan, giving it access to a wide variety of fresh seafood, including fish, crab, and shellfish. During the Edo period, the city also prospered as a port of call for the Kitamaebune trading ships, which brought ingredients and culinary traditions from around Japan. As a result, Kanazawa has become well known for its outstanding food culture.
The city’s culinary heart is Omicho Market, often called “Kanazawa’s Kitchen.”

One of the market’s most popular dishes is the seafood rice bowl (kaisendon). I was especially surprised by how incredibly sweet the sweet shrimp tasted. From the very beginning of my trip, I was able to enjoy one of Kanazawa’s greatest culinary delights.

Omicho Market is about a 15-minute walk from Kanazawa Station. The restaurants in the market often have long lines around lunchtime, but since I arrived at 10:00 a.m., I was able to enjoy my meal without waiting.
Next, I headed to Myoryuji Temple (the Ninja Temple).
