Kumano Kodo Day 2 (Part 1): Tsuboyu

Tsuboyu is a hot spring where pilgrims are said to have purified themselves and healed their fatigue on the way to worship at Kumano Grand Shrine.

It is also famous for the legend that Oguri Hangan, who had been poisoned, was revived after bathing in these waters.

The story of Oguri Hangan is also featured in Kabuki plays.

Oguri Hangan was targeted by his enemies and nearly killed, but thanks to his lover Terute-hime, he escaped death. However, he was poisoned and left in a near-death state, reviving in a disfigured form.

He was told that he would recover if he went to Kumano, and with the help of others, he made his way there.

After bathing in Tsuboyu, he was restored by the healing power of the hot spring and the divine power of Kumano, eventually returning to his original form.

He later defeated his enemies, found Terute-hime—who had been traveling from place to place—and the two were reunited and became husband and wife.

This legendary Tsuboyu is still open for bathing today.

When I visited, there were already five people waiting at 6:00 AM.

Tsuboyu uses a numbered ticket system, and once you take a ticket, you must stay and wait.

If your turn comes and you are not there, you have to go to the back of the line again.

Since I didn’t have enough time to wait, I gave up on bathing and only took photos of the exterior.

The hot spring water flows into the river, and steam rises from the surface, creating a very atmospheric and almost mystical scene.

There is also a small Jizo statue nearby, which is said to bring blessings for childbirth.
