在原業平の建立と伝えられます。在原業平は、平城天皇の皇子阿保親王の子です。平城天皇は、都が京都になった後、もう一度奈良に都を戻そうと図りましたが、嵯峨天皇側に計画が露見して失敗し、出家しました。そして皇太子だった平城天皇の息子高岳親王も皇太子の位を剥奪され、平城天皇に近い親族は、身分は保障されたものの地方に左遷されるなど、表舞台からは遠ざけられました。平城天皇自身は上皇として奈良に住み続け、平城天皇が亡くなった後、その場所を在原業平が寺に作り変えました。不退寺という寺の名前は、法輪を転じて退かず、人々のために法を守り退かない、という意味ですが、裏の意図もありそうです。
Futaiji Temple is said to have been founded by Ariwara no Narihira在原業平. Narihira was the son of Prince Abo阿保親王, himself a son of Emperor Heizei平城天皇. After the capital was moved to Kyoto, Emperor Heizei attempted to return it to Nara, but the plan was exposed by the faction supporting Emperor Saga嵯峨天皇 and ultimately failed. Emperor Heizei then entered the Buddhist priesthood. His son, Prince Takaoka高岳親王, who had been crown prince, was stripped of that position, and relatives close to Emperor Heizei—though their status was formally preserved—were transferred to provincial posts and removed from the political forefront.
業平が伊勢神宮に行ったときに天照大神より賜ったご神鏡を宝とし、業平自ら聖観音像を作りご本尊としたそうです。恋に生きた業平作と伝えられる聖観音像は、女性的で艶かしい美しさを放っています。
According to tradition, Narihira treasured a sacred mirror bestowed upon him by the sun goddess Amaterasu天照大神 when he visited the Ise Grand Shrine伊勢神宮. He is also said to have carved the principal image of the temple himself—a statue of Shō Kannon聖観音像 (Sacred Avalokiteśvara). This statue, attributed to Narihira, who was famed for a life devoted to love and romance, radiates a sensuous and feminine beauty.
