日本最古の神社、大神神社の神様は、蛇の姿をして現れることがあると言われています。大神神社の境内には、蛇の姿をした神様のために、蛇の好物である卵が供えられています。
The god of Omiwa Shrine, the oldest shrine in Japan, is said to sometimes appear in the form of a snake. Eggs, a favorite food of snakes, are offered to the god in the precincts of Omiwa Shrine.
蛇は、何度も脱皮することから、再生や復活を表す生き物として好まれています。蛇の抜け殻を財布の中に入れておくと金運が上がるとも言われています。出雲大社など、全国にも蛇を神様の使いとする神社があります。
Snakes were popular in Japan because they shed their skin many times and are seen as creature that represent regenetion and resurrection. It is said that keeping a snakes shed skin in your wallet will bring you good fortune. There are shrines across the country, such as Izumo Taishi, where snakes are considered messengers of the gods.
一方で蛇を恐ろしいものとする考えもあります。有名な昔話では、好きな男に裏切られた女が、蛇となって男を追いかけ、最後には口から火を吹き、寺の鐘の中に逃げた男を焼き殺してしまうという伝説があります。
On the other hand, there is also the idea that snakes are frightening. In one famous folktale, a woman she was betrayed by the man she loved turned into a snake and chased him, eventually breathed fire from her mouth and a brought the man to death though he fleed into a temple bell.
西洋でも、蛇はイブを騙した悪いものであったり、永遠を表す生き物だったり、良い面と悪い面を持っているようです。
どちらにしても蛇は、特別な力を持つと考えられていたようです。
In the West, too, the snake is seen as evil creature that deceived Eve. In the other hand, the snakes is seen as creatures that represents eternity, and as having both good and bad sides. Either way, snakes are thought to have special powers.
