金堂は奈良時代の建物です。堂内撮影禁止だったので撮れませんでしたが、仏像も圧巻です。千手観音は、普通は千本の手を省略して数本の手が表現されているだけですが、唐招提寺の千手観音は、本当に手が千本あります。仏像の大きさや緻密さにも圧倒されます。
The main hall is a building from the Nara period. Photography is prohibited inside, so I couldn’t take any pictures, but the Buddhist statues are truly impressive. Usually, the Thousand-Hand Kannon is depicted with just a few hands, but the one at Tōshōdai-ji actually has thousand hands. The size and intricate details of the statues are also overwhelming.
唐招提寺は、鑑真和尚が修行の道場として建てた寺です。鑑真和尚は、唐でも有名な僧でしたが、日本で僧が必要だと知り、日本に渡ることを決意しました。当時最も先進国だった唐で多くの弟子たちに慕われていた鑑真は、おそらく何の不足もない生活をしていたと思われますが、そんな生活を捨てて辺境の日本へ渡った動機は、仏教によってより多くの人を救いたいという使命感だったのでしょう。その時鑑真は55歳、その後、鑑真が日本に渡るのを惜しむ唐の人々に妨害されたり、暴風雨で船が出航できなくなったり、船が漂流したり、苦労の末10年後にやっと日本に到着しました。その間に鑑真は疲労や厳しい気候により視力を失っていました。日本に着いた鑑真は、10年間日本の人々のために僧として活動し、76歳で亡くなりました。死去を惜しんだ弟子によって作られた鑑真の像は、今は国宝となっています。
Tōshōdai-ji was founded by Ganjin as a training temple. Ganjin was a well-known monk in Tang China, but upon realizing that Japan needed monks, he decided to journey there. Although he must have been living a comfortable life in the most advanced country of his time, Ganjin felt a mission to save more people through Buddhism, which probably motivated him to leave everything behind for the distant land of Japan. At that time, he was 55 years old.
Ganjin faced numerous challenges on his journey; he was hindered by people in Tang who were reluctant to let him go, and he encountered storms that delayed his departure. After ten years of struggle, he finally arrived in Japan. During this time, he lost his eyesight due to fatigue and the harsh climate. Once in Japan, Ganjin dedicated himself to serving the people as a monk for ten years until his passing at the age of 76. A statue of Ganjin, created by his disciples in mourning for his death, is now a national treasure.
