この杉は、奈良の長谷寺の境内にあります。あまり目立つ場所にはありませんが、『源氏物語』で重要な役割を果たしている杉です。
These cedar trees are in the Hase-dera-Temple長谷寺,in Nara. The cedar trees do not stand in a particularly prominent place, but they play an important role in “The Tale of Genji.”
『源氏物語』の中に、玉鬘という女性が登場します。
In “The Tale of Genji,” there is a woman named Tamakazura玉鬘.
玉鬘の父は身分の高い貴公子であり、玉鬘の母は身分が低かっため玉鬘の父の愛人として暮らしていました。ある日玉鬘の母は行方知れずになってしまいました。頼るものもない玉鬘は4歳の時、乳母に連れられて都を離れ九州へと移りました。
玉鬘Tamakazura’s father was a high-ranking nobleman, while her mother, being of low status, lived as his mistress. One day, Tamakazura’s mother disappeared without a trace. With no one to rely on, four-year-old Tamakazura was taken by her wet nurse and moved to Kyushu.
乳母は自分の孫ということにして玉鬘を大事に育てました。美しく成長した玉鬘は九州で評判となりますが、乳母はもともと高貴な出自である玉鬘には都でしかるべき貴族の妻となってほしいと思っていたため、玉鬘の縁談を全て断っていました。
The wet nurse raised Tamakazura as her own granddaughter, nurturing her with great care. As Tamakazura grew into a beautiful young woman, she became well-known in Kyushu. However, the wet nurse, knowing Tamakazura’s noble lineage, wished for her to marry into an appropriate noble family in the capital and therefore turned down all marriage proposals.
あるとき、九州で権力を持つ男が玉鬘を妻にと願ってきて、断ることが難しそうになったので、乳母と玉鬘は急いで都へと出発しました。
One day, a powerful man in Kyushu sought to marry Tamakazura, making it difficult for the wet nurse to refuse. In haste, the wet nurse and Tamakazura set out for the capital.
都に着いたものの、玉鬘の母の行方も分からず身を落ち着ける場所もなく、途方に暮れた乳母たちは、様々な神仏に祈った後、初瀬（長谷寺）こそは願いを叶えてくれるだろうと、初瀬参りに出かけました。
Upon arriving in the capital, with no clue of her mother’s whereabouts and no place to settle, the wet nurse and her companions found themselves at a loss. After praying to various gods and Buddhas, they decided that a pilgrimage to Hase-dera would grant their wishes.
車などは使わずあえて徒歩で苦労して4日歩き通して初瀬に詣でた時、宿を取ろうとすると、先客があります。その先客の中に、昔玉鬘の母に仕えていた右近がいました。右近は、玉鬘との再会を喜び、和歌を詠みました。
They walked for four days without using any carriages, enduring the hardship until they reached Hase-dera. When they tried to find lodging, they discovered the place was already occupied. Among the previous guests was Ukon右近, who had once served Tamakazura’s mother. Ukon was overjoyed to reunite with Tamakazura and composed a waka poem.
二本の杉のたちどを尋ねずは古川野辺に君を見ましや
二本の杉の立っている長谷寺に参詣しなかったら、古い川の近くで君に会えただろうか
“If I had not come to seek the twin cedars二本の杉 of Hase-dera,長谷寺, would I have found you by the old riverbank?”
玉鬘は歌を返しました。
初瀬川はやくのことは知らねども今日の逢瀬に身さへ流れぬ
昔のことは知りませんが、今日の出会いに嬉しくて、流れの早い初瀬川の瀬に流れるように、私の身までも流れていきそうです。
Tamakazura responded with her own poem.
“I do not know the past of the Hase River, but today’s meeting makes me feel as if I, too, am swept away by its swift current.”
その後右近は、自分が仕える光源氏のもとに帰り、光源氏に報告すると、光源氏は玉鬘を自分の娘として育てることにしました。
都でも最もときめく源氏に引き取られた玉鬘は、都でも評判の美しい娘へと成長していくのでした。
Afterward, Ukon returned to the service of Hikaru Genji光源氏 and reported to him. Upon hearing this, Hikaru Genji decided to take Tamakazura and raise her as his own daughter.
Under the care of Hikaru Genji, the most esteemed noble in the capital, Tamakazura grew into a woman of great beauty, renowned even in the capital.
長谷寺にある二本の杉は、玉鬘と右近の再会の場面で重要な役割を果たしています。『源氏物語』の中でも、長谷寺は願いを叶えてくれる寺として登場しています。
The two cedar trees at Hase Temple play an important role in the scene where Tamakazura and Ukon reunite.In “The Tale of Genji,” Hasedera appears as a temple that grants wishes.
