Minamoto no Yoshitsune

One of the most popular tragic heroes in Japan, Minamoto no Yoshitsune. He has become the protagonist of numerous stories and plays.

His upbringing is shrouded in mystery. He is the son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, who was overcome by Taira no Kiyomori and killed in the Heiji Rebellion. When Yoshitomo was killed, it is said that young Yoshitsune was also in danger of being killed but was saved due to his mother’s beauty.

Afterwards, Yoshitsune spent his time at Mount Kurama in Kyoto, where he is said to have honed his martial arts skills with the help of tengu and sought to avenge his father’s death.

Mount Kurama is a famous landmark in Kyoto, and it has an air of mystery that is often associated with tengu. It’s a pity that I don’t have images to share.

As Yoshitsune grew up, he became a formidable warrior. While walking around the area of Gojo Bridge in Kyoto, Yoshitsune encountered a man named Benkei, who was known for robbing 999 swords.

Benkei, believing that Yoshitsune, who was passing by while playing the flute, must be weak, attempted to rob Yoshitsune’s sword but ended up being defeated by him instead. This encounter led Benkei to become a loyal retainer of Yoshitsune.
