Osyu Hiraizumi

Hiraizumi, where Yoshitsune hid, was a thriving city during the Heian period and ranked as the second largest city in Japan. After Yoshitsune’s suicide, it was swiftly destroyed by Minamoto no Yoritomo. However, it was known to possess a cultural richness comparable to that of Heian-kyo (Kyoto). It was a region known for its production of placer gold, and the Chuson-ji Konjikido (Golden Hall) was constructed during the Heian period and is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.Japan being referred to as the “Golden Country” is also said to be derived from the Golden Hall(Konjikido). The city thrived during the reigns of the three successive Fujiwara lords, Kiyohira, Motohira, and Hidehira. It ultimately met its downfall due to harboring Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who was pursued by Yoritomo, and posing a threat to the Kamakura shogunate with its growing power. However, there is no doubt that it was a significant city that shaped history.
