平和への祈り Pray for peace
752年に完成し、今では世界遺産の一つである奈良の大仏。
The Great Buddha of Nara, which was completed in 752 and is now one of the World Heritage Sites.
この大仏が作られた時代は、疫病や飢饉、地震、乱などが起こった時期でした。聖武天皇は国が平和になることを祈って、この大仏を建てることを命じました。
The era when this Great Buddha was made was a time when epidemics, famines, earthquakes, disturbances, etc. occurred. Emperor Shomu ordered the construction of this Great Buddha in the hope that the country would be peaceful.
奈良時代、当時の人口の約2分の1の260万人の人が協力し、平和な世を願ってこの大仏は作られたとされています。以降約1300年、奈良の大仏は人々の太平への祈りを聞き続けてきました。
In the Nara period, 2.6 million people, about one-half of the population in Japan at that time, cooperated to create this Great Buddha, in the hope of a peaceful world. For about 1300 years, the Great Buddha of Nara has continued to listen to people’s prayers for peace.
奈良の大仏は華厳教の仏様ですが、華厳教では、あらゆる存在には価値があると考えるそうです。強い者も弱い者も、身分が高い者も低い者も、全ては平等に尊いと言う華厳の教えを信じた聖武天皇が、この大仏を作ろうと考えたとされています。
The Great Buddha of Nara is a deity of the Kegon Sect of Buddhism, which preach that every being has value. Emperor Shomu, who believed the Kegon teaching that the strong and the weak, the high-born and the low-born, are all equally precious, conceived the idea of creating this Great Buddha.
私が大仏を拝観した日、すれ違った外国の方が、「ウクライナの平和を」と祈っていたのが印象的でした。昔も今も、場所は違っても、平和を祈る気持ちは一緒なのだと思いました。
On the day I visited the Great Buddha, a foreign man was praying for “peace in Ukraine”. In the past and now, prayer for peace is the same.
大仏殿は、奈良時代に建てられましたが、何度か火災に遭い、今の建物は江戸時代のものだそうです。奈良時代とほとんど同じ外観ですが、改良も加えられているそうです。
The Great Buddha Hall was built in the Nara period, but it was set on fire several times, and the current building is from the Edo period.It has almost the same appearance as the Nara period, but improvements have been added.
運慶の金剛力士像（国宝）が、間近で見られます。憤怒の表情や風になびく衣装のひだが、圧巻です。
The statue of Kongo Rikishi (national treasure)of Unkeican be seen up close. The expression of anger and the flid of the costume fluttering in the wind are a masterpiece.
広目天像。厳しくも力強い優しさを感じさせられます。
Komokuten statue. It makes you feel strict but powerful kindness.
大仏様の横にも、金の仏様。Next to the Great Buddha, the golden Buddha.
