Taira no Kiyomori, an extraordinary figure in the hierarchical society of the Heian period, achieved unprecedented success and became the first samurai to hold the position of Daijō-daijin (Chancellor). While he is often portrayed as a villain in stories due to his somewhat forceful nature, he left behind numerous accomplishments such as promoting trade with Song Dynasty China, overseeing major renovations of Itsukushima Shrine, and implementing financial reforms.
There are many legends surrounding Kiyomori, and one of them tells the story of him being confronted by numerous skeletal apparitions in his garden. It is said that he stared back at them and successfully drove them away. This tale reflects his courageous nature as someone who was not swayed by superstitions.
