
奈良の春日大社に奉納された大鎧などが特別展示されています。侍たちが戦いで身につけた豪華絢爛な武具を見ることができます。侍たちにとって、戦いは勝つことも大事ですが、美しく戦うことも重視されていました。鎌倉時代の『平家物語』では、侍たちがどのような装いで戦いに臨んだか、どのような戦い方をしたかも詳しく書かれています。侍たちの大勝負を彩った大鎧は、侍たちの美意識を今に伝えています。
There is a special exhibition of great armor donated to Kasuga Tanisha Shrine in Nara. You can see the gorgeous and magnicificent weapons worn by samurai in battle. For samurai, winning a battle was important, but they also placed importance on fighting beautifully. The Kamakura period “Tale of Heike” describes in detail how samurai dressed and fought in battle. The great armor that adorned the samurai’s great battles conveys the samurai’s aesthetic sense to the present day.

屋島合戦は『平家物語』でも有名な場面で、様々なエピソードがあります。屋島合戦はもともと源義経にとって不利な戦いであり、源義経が戦いに赴く際、周囲の心配をよそに大将自ら先陣となって討死覚悟で戦いに臨んだという話や、佐藤継信が義経をかばって矢を受けて死んだという伝説があります。また、義経が自分の弓を落としてしまい、源氏の大将である自分が弱い弓を持っていると知られることを恥として命がけで拾いに行ったなどのエピソードがあります。
The battle of Yashima is a famous scene in “The Tale of Heike”, and there are many stories about it. At first,the Battle of Yashima was considerd an unfavorable battle for Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and when he went to battle, despite the concerns of those around him, Yoshitsune, the general himself took the lead, without fear of death. And there is also a legend that Sato Tsugunobu died to protect Yoshitsune after being hit by an arrow. There is also an episode in which Yoshitsune dropped his bow, and risked his life to retrieve it, because it would be a shame to be known that he, the general of the Genji, had a weak bow.
