It is well-known that Oda Nobunaga(1534-1582),warlords of the Warring States period, favored the story of “Atsumori.” It is said that before heading to the Battle of Okehazama, Nobunaga performed a dance based on “Atsumori.”
The lyrics of the dance “Atsumori,” which is said to have been performed by Nobunaga:
Fifty years of human life is like a fleeting dream, compared to the vastness of the universe.
Who among those born into this world can live without facing death?
I wonder what was Nobunaga’s state of mind as he sang the lyrics that expressed the idea that anyone would eventually face death, before heading into a life-or-death battle.
Currently, the same dance that Nobunaga performed is not performed, but the Noh play “Atsumori” is still occasionally performed as a popular piece.
