玉鬘は、身分高い貴族とその愛人の間に京都で生まれた娘でしたが、父親を知らず、母親が行方不明になったため、九州に住んでいました。その後上京しますが、母は行方不明になった時に亡くなっていたことが分かり、母の恋人であった光源氏に引き取られ、娘のように育てられました。
Tamakazura玉鬘 was born in Kyoto as the daughter of a high-ranking noble and his mistress, but she did not know her father. After her mother went missing, she lived in Kyushu. Later, she traveled to the capital and learned that her mother had died when she disappeared. She was taken in by Hikaru Genji光源氏, who had been her mother’s lover, and was raised as his daughter.
玉鬘は、その美しさと聡明さから多くの貴公子から求愛を受けました。中でも、蛍の飛ぶほのかな灯りの中で、玉鬘の美しさが高貴な男性の心を奪った場面が有名です。光源氏も玉鬘の美しさに心奪われ、玉鬘に恋人めいた言葉を投げかける場面がありますが、玉鬘は冷たく断りました。
Due to her beauty and intelligence, Tamakazura received many proposals from noble young men. Among these, a famous scene describes her beauty captivating the hearts of noblemen in the faint light of fireflies. Hikaru Genji was also captivated by Tamakazura’s beauty and expressed his affection for her with words akin to those of a lover. However, Tamakazura coldly rejected him.
次々と現れる求婚者たちに、玉鬘は戸惑っていました。そんな中、熱心に言い寄ってきた髭の濃い男の策略によって、玉鬘は髭の濃い男と心ならずも結婚することになりました。玉鬘は、自らの美しさによって、男性の心を惑わせ、自らも望まない運命をたどる人物として描かれています。
Tamakazura was bewildered by the numerous suitors who appeared one after another. Amidst this, due to the schemes of a man with a thick beard who persistently pursued her, Tamakazura unwillingly ended up marrying him. She is portrayed as a character whose beauty bewitched the hearts of men, leading her to a fate she did not desire.
玉鬘とは、「宝石のような髪」という意味ですが、長い髪は自分の意図に反して伸びるため、「運命」「どうにもならないこと」の象徴でもあります。古代の日本女性にとって、長い髪は美しさの象徴でもありました。紫式部は『源氏物語』に登場する「玉鬘」という女性を、自らの美しさによって波乱に富んだ運命をたどる女性として描き出しています。
The name Tamakazura means “jewel-like hair,” but long hair, growing despite one’s intentions, symbolizes “fate” and “inevitability.” For ancient Japanese women, long hair was also a symbol of beauty. 『源氏物語』の登場人物ですが、その美しさと聡明さ、波瀾に満ちた人生から、謡曲などの主人公にもなりました。
