平家物語の登場人物たちは、能や歌舞伎の主役にもなっています。代表的なのは、平敦盛です。
The characters from “The Tale of the Heike” have also become protagonists in Noh and Kabuki performances. The most representative one is Taira no Atsumori.
平敦盛は平清盛の甥で、当時15歳、笛の名手でした。
Taira no Atsumori was 15 years old and the nephew of Chancellor Taira no Kiyomori, known for his skill in playing the flute.
平家が滅亡する前、敵から逃げようとしていた敦盛は、平家の侍を追っていた熊谷直実に捕らえられてしまいました。
Taira no Atsumori, who was attempting to flee from the enemy before the fall of the Taira clan, was captured by Kumagai Naozane, an adversary of the Taira clan, pursuing the samurais of the Taira clan.
熊谷直実は敦盛の兜を外し首を切ろうとしましたが、敦盛のあまりの美しさに驚き、思いました。「我が子と同じくらいの年頃だ。もしこの人が討たれたら、この人の父はどれほど嘆くだろう。どうにかしてこの人を助けてあげたい。」
Kumagai Naozane tried to remove Atsumori’s helmet and cut off his head, but he was astonished by Atsumori’s overwhelming beauty and thought, “He is just about the same age as my own child. If this person is killed, how much his father would grieve. I must find a way to help this person.”
直実は敦盛に聞きました。「あなたはどういう人ですか。名乗ってください。助けましょう。」
Naozane asked Atsumori, “Who are you? Please introduce yourself .And I will save you.”
敦盛は直実に「お前は誰だ。」と聞きました。直実は「つまらない者ですが、武蔵の国の熊谷直実と申します。」と言いました。
Atsumori asked Naozane, “Who are you?” Naozane replied, “I am an insignificant person, I am Naozane Kumatani from Musashi Province.”
敦盛は言いました。「それでは名乗る必要はない。私はお前にとっては良い敵だ。私の首を取って誰かに問えば、知っているだろう。」
Atsumori said, “There is no need to introduce myself. I am a worthy opponent for you. If you take my head and ask someone, they will tell you my name.”
誇り高い敦盛は敵から助けられるくらいなら死を選ぼうとしますが、直実はどうにかして助けてあげたいと思います。
Atsumori, having a high sense of pride, would choose death over being saved by his enemy, while Naozane desperately wanted to find a way to help him.
そこで直実が後ろを振り返ると、後ろから直実の味方、敦盛の敵がやってきます。
As Naozane looked back, he saw Naozane’s allies, who were enemies of Atsumori, approaching from behind.
直実は言います。「助けて差し上げたいとは思いますが、味方が来ています。どちらにしてもあなたが死ぬのなら、他の人の手にかけるより、私の手にかけて、後の供養をしましょう。」
Naozane said, “I do wish to help you, but my allies are coming. They will kill you.If you are to die either way, it would be better for me to kill you , rather than letting someone else kill you.I will perform the proper funeral rites.”
敦盛は言いました。「ただ早く首を切れ。」
Atsumori said, “Just cut off my head quickly.”
直実はとても悲しみましたが、泣く泣く首を切りました。
Naozane felt deeply saddened, but with tears in his eyes, he killed Atsumori.
直実は思いました。「侍ほど残念なものはない。侍として生まれなければ、こんなに辛い目には合わなかった。」
Naozane thought, “There is nothing more pitiful than a samurai. If I hadn’t been born as a samurai, I wouldn’t have experienced such hardship.”
敦盛の亡骸には、笛が携えられていました。直実は思いました。「昨晩笛を奏でていたのは、この人だったのだ。戦いに笛を持ってくるとは、なんと優雅な人だろう。」
Naozane found Atsumori’s remains with a flute. Naozane thought, “It was this person who was playing the flute last night. What an elegant person to bring a flute to battle.”
直実はこの後、出家して僧になりました。
After this,Naozane became a monk ,stopped being a samurai.
