2 persimmon leaf sushi2

It is said that the origin of persimmon leaf sushi originated from the fact that it was wrapped in persimmon leaves to increase the preservation of fish. But when it comes to wrapping rice in leaves, what I remember is Prince Arima’s waka,Japanese poem.

“When I’m at home, I put rice on the plate , but now I’m on a trip, so I put it on the leaves of the beech tree.”

At this time, the author, Prince Arima, was on an unhappy journey. This is a waka written by Prince Arima during his journey to be captured in the battle for the succession to the Imperial Throne and to be interrogated, and anxiety and loneliness are sung by describing an unusual environment . The Nara period was a time when there were many executions of the imperial family due to the succession dispute, and this waka has been handed down along with the tragedy of the prince.

While eating persimmon leaf sushi in Nara, I remembered such an ancient event.
