五月待つ花橘の香をかげば昔の人の袖の香ぞする
Satsuki Matsu Hanatatibanano Kawo kageba Mukashino Hitono Sodeno Kazo suru
現代語訳 5月を待つ花橘の香をかぐと、昔の人の袖の香がする
While waiting for May, when I smell the fragrance of orange blossoms, I remember the scent of the sleeve of the person I used to know.
ふとしたときに、昔知っていた人のことを思い出すことは誰にでもあると思います。和歌の中では「人」とは恋人であることが多いので、ここでは別れた恋人なのかもしれません。
Perhaps everyone recalls someone they knew in the past at one moment. In Japanese poetry, the word “hito” often refers to a lover, so in this case, it could be a former lover.
誰が詠んだか分からない和歌ですが、多くの人々から愛唱されてきました。
